Intent

At Naburn, reading is at the heart of our curriculum. The use of carefully planned texts are the driver for our curriculum and this ensures that all children have access to a wide range of high quality, relevant and engaging books that enables them to become enthusiastic, confident, fluent and motivated readers. Reading provides the tools to enable access to a wider curriculum and enriched learning.

Implementation

The Reading process throughout school is as follows:

  • Immersion – children are introduced to a high quality text
  • Vocabulary – children develop strategies to understand unfamiliar words
  • Inference – children use evidence and reasoning using clues in the text
  • Prediction – children forecast future events
  • Explanation – children give reasons or justifications
  • Retrieval – children find information in the text
  • Summarising – children give a brief statement of the main points

Impact

We strive to ensure that our children’s attainment is in line or exceeds their potential and that children will develop a lifelong enjoyment of reading.

  • Children will become independent and fluent readers, able to read with accuracy and understanding.
  • Children will develop a lifelong enjoyment of reading.
  • Children will have the skills so that they can access the next step of their education.

How our values shine through in Reading

Aspiration: We are encouraged to read challenging texts which will develop confidence, stamina and a positive attitude towards reading. Children will be inspired by a range of authors, genres and topics which will motivate them to develop high aspirations.

Respect: Children will learn to respect people from different backgrounds and periods through literature.

Community: Through reading and exploring a wide range of texts, children learn about key values and morals in order to help them become reliable, empathic and respectable members of society.
