Writing

English Writing at Naburn

You should write because you love the shape of stories and sentences and the creation of different words on a page. Writing comes from reading, and reading is the finest teacher of how to write.Annie Proulx
Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the readers.Stephen King

Intent

At Naburn, we believe that writing is a fundamental tool which enables children to communicate and express themselves as competent and confident writers. We strive to provide children with the grammatical understanding and a rich vocabulary with which to write clearly, accurately and coherently. Our writing curriculum gives children the independence and confidence to adapt their language for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

Implementation

The writing process throughout school is as follows:

  • Immersion – children are introduced to a text/audience/purpose
  • Gather Ideas and Planning
  • Modelling, Shared Writing and Drafting
  • Evaluating, Editing and Proofreading
  • Publishing, Performing and Celebrating Success

Impact

We strive to ensure that our children’s attainment is in line or exceeds their potential and that children will develop a lifelong enjoyment of writing.

  • We provide our children with skills that allow them to develop into confident and creative writers and communicators.
  • We instil a love of writing and discussion, promoting reflective learners that are empowered to communicate effectively and express their ideas and emotions.
  • We instill high expectations and foster an environment whereby children take pride in their work.

How do our values shine through in Writing?

Aspiration: We are encouraged to write to a high standard by evaluating and refining their work and editing and proofreading to achieve our best.

Respect: We respect the writing process by learning to write together on a variety of subjects which are important to us. We learn about each other’s thoughts, cultures, values, knowledge and feelings and have a respect for each other’s individual liberty and tolerance of alternative points of view.

Community: We trust in ourselves and each other as confident and creative communicators, who can express their ideas clearly and articulately.

Phonics

We believe that for all our children to become fluent readers and writers, phonics must be taught through a systematic and structured phonics programme.

We teach daily discreet phonics lessons, differentiated for pupils across both key stages. We use Little Wandle to plan and provide daily engaging phonics lessons. Click here to read the information letter for parents about Little Wandle.
