Naburn School, in the building we still have today, began in 1872 when a National School was set up. According to the school log it was on 30th September 1872 that the new Elementary School was opened with fourteen pupils in the ‘Mixed school’ and nineteen ‘Infants’.
The school remained as it had been originally built until the late 1980s, with two rooms off a hall, just one classroom, and no indoor toilets. In 1997 an extension was built and this was when truly modern sanitation finally appeared. When Verna Campbell (who used to be Headteacher here) visited, she told us many stories of outside toilets, chilly winters and spiders. We are very glad that things have changed!
The fact that we still use the original Victorian building helps us to retain the atmosphere of a village school. We still have many original documents and maps, including the old Behaviour Log Book dating back from when the school was first in use, which the children enjoy reading!
Of course, many more improvements have been made since then including a mezzanine floor in the roof space to provide an extra classroom and, most recently, the refurbishment of our beautiful new library which was officially opened in September 2024 by our local MP, Luke Charters.
Celebrating 150 Years
Members of our local community joined past and present members of the school to celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2022. It was a truly special day, celebrating our long history and our bright future at the heart of our community.
What an amazing day! The staff, children and our whole community joined together to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our very special little school.
We featured in the Press and were even interviewed about it on the radio! We hope you enjoy this selection of images from the day. The staff and children did an AMAZING job of getting into character!
